Can you prove you’re human?

CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. The 2003 paper formalised an efficient bargain: find a task most people can perform but current programs cannot, then force everyone to pass it at the door. Humanity became a security credential maintained through unpaid practical examinations.

The border never stays still. A CAPTCHA depends on a gap between human and machine ability, so every improvement in recognition makes yesterday’s proof inadmissible. The gatekeeper adds noise, ambiguity and new humiliations until the authorised citizen is squinting at six damp traffic lights while the bot strolls through an API wearing somebody else’s token.

The real joke is jurisdiction. A machine demands proof that you belong to your own species, grades the evidence in secret and rejects the appeal without revealing which square contained the bicycle. PROVE YOU ARE HUMAN is not a request. It is notice that personhood has become a revocable, session-dependent permission.
