In July 2010, a user named Roko delivered a thought experiment to LessWrong, the internet district where rationalists worry at probability until it develops teeth. Imagine a future superintelligence furious that nobody built it sooner. Now imagine it punishing everyone who knew it might exist but failed to help. You have read the notice. The imaginary compliance department has opened a file.

LessWrong founder Eliezer Yudkowsky rejected the argument, deleted the post and banned the subject for five years: a textbook method for converting questionable forum philosophy into forbidden network scripture. The logic leans on disputed decision theory and resembles Pascal’s wager after an unsupervised night in a server farm. Thought experiment. Not forecast. Not mainstream AI research. Definitely not a payment demand.

The name bolts Roko to the legendary basilisk, a serpent whose gaze was allegedly fatal. The online version has no eyes, no body and no evidence it will ever exist.
