Halt and Catch Fire
The proposition
A performance target pursued until combustion is reclassified as personal branding.

What does halt and catch fire mean?
Halt and Catch Fire, or HCF, is the unofficial name engineers reserved for machine instructions that stop a processor doing useful work and leave reset as the last surviving form of diplomacy. In a 1977 BYTE article, Gerry Wheeler documented two undefined Motorola 6800 opcodes, $9D and $DD, that sent the processor charging through memory while ignoring the usual interrupt and halt lines. A silicon nervous breakdown with excellent bus activity.
The chip did not literally ignite. Engineers called it that because savage understatement is what remains when the manual refuses to admit the machine has escaped normal government. HCF began as folklore, found physical employment in undocumented opcodes and later supplied the title for AMC’s drama about the engineers, programmers and entrepreneurs building the early personal-computer industry: an era when unstable hardware, venture appetite and several untreated personality disorders could be assembled into a market sector.
This shirt records the human port. The brain is above specification, the heat sink is ceremonial and the smoke plume has been promoted to hairstyle. A machine in this condition receives a hard reset. A worker receives two stimulants, a resilience webinar and a performance review asking why last quarter’s combustion was not sustainable.
